The United States of America buy Alaska from the Russians at a price of 2 cents an acre. The final price was 2.7 million dollars. The reason it is sometimes called "Seward's Folly" or "Seward's Icebox" is because when Seward purchased it, Alaska looked like a big frozen block of ice until they found gold in the Klondike on August 16, 1896. It was also called Johnson's Polar Bear Garden.

Gold is found in large amounts at the Klondike in Alaska and it causes a gold rush called The Yukon Gold Rush among other names.

Gold was discoverd in Alaska by Dawson Charlie, Shookum Jim Mason, and George Carmack. Not much gold was found after the first discovery, so this rush ended quickly.
