  • U.S. Govt. Under The Constitution Begins

    " Highness " and " Excellency " are suggestions for addressing the president. George Washington was inaugurated while becoming the first president of the United States. Washington states U.S. neutrality after the French Revolution begins in Paris
  • First Census

    Benjamin Franklin dies in Philadelphia. The U.S. population totals 3.9 million and 700,000 out of the 760,000 African Americans are enslaved
  • Bill of Rights is Ratified

    The Bill of Rights become part of the Constitution. Vermont entered the Union as the Fourteenth state. Alexander Hamilton submits his report on Manufactures to Congress. The United States troops are defeated by the Miami Indians in Ohio after being sent by Washington to respond to the massacre of settlers at Big Bottom.
  • Presidential Election

    George Washington and John Adams are re-elected president and vice- pres. Eli Whitney invents the cotton gin so the cotton production soars. Also, the Fugitive Slave Act is passed by Congress.
  • Whiskey Rebellion

    Farmers in western Pennsylvania protest the excise tax on whiskey. The Shawnee Indians fall short to the U.S. troops.
  • NortheWest Territory

    The Northwestern Territory is opened for settlement after Indian defeat at Fallen Timbers.
  • Presidential Election

    John Adams defeats Thomas Jefferson for president and then Washington leaves the presidency after two terms and delivers his Farewell Address.
  • Quasi War

    The Quasi War of 1798-1800 began when the france attempted to bribe the United States commissioners in Paris.
  • Alien & Sedition Acts

    This act restrict political opposition and order deportation of "dangerous aliens." Eli Whitney opened a factory to build rifles for the United States government. During this time George Washington dies in Virginia at age 67.
  • Second Census

    The U.S. population increases totals 5.3 million, including one million African Americans. of whom 900,000 are enslaved. Free African American petition Congress to repeal the Fugitive Slave Act of 1793. South Carolina bans slaves from gathering for religious worship between sunset and dawn.
  • Presidential Election

    Jefferson & Burr ( Democratic - Republic ) tie for President, defeating Adams and Pinckney ( Federalist ).
  • Barbary War Begins

    Tripoli declares war on The United States. Jefferson sends U.S. ships to the Mediterranean Sea.
  • The Louisiana Territory

    The Louisiana Territory was purchased from France. France sold the territory for about Fifteen Million dollars. With that, it nearly doubled the size of the United States.
  • Lewis and Clark Expedition

    The expedition began in St. Louis. Ohio enters the Union as the 17th state, granting universal manhood suffrage. Samuel Adams dies in Boston at age 81. He was born in 1722.
  • Marbury v. Madison

    Supreme Court declares its right to review the constitutionality of acts of Congress.
  • 1804 Summary

    Twelfth Amendment is ratified, providing for separate election of president and vice president. Alexander Hamilton is killed by Vice President Aaron Burr in a duel to the death.
  • Barbary War Ends

    After United State troops capture Darna, the war ended. Piracy by Barbary States continues until 1815. Lewis and Clark expedition reaches the Pacific Ocean.
  • Ban On Slave Trade

    The ban on slave trade is passed by Congress, as it was required to be in the Constitution. Also, the Embargo Act is passed by Congress in response to the British and the French who interfered with the U.S. trade. Jefferson orders the British warships to leave United States waters after the British attack the Chesapeake. With all of this going on, Cotton found its way to the top of the list as the leading United States export cargo.
  • Presidential Election of 1808

    Before the Presidential Election of 1808 happened, the Osage tribe cedes its lands in Missouri and Arkansas regions to the U.S.. Also the U.S. ships and cargoes in European ports are confiscated by France. So, James Madison was elected president and George Clinton was reelected as the vice president.
  • Third Census

    The United States population totals to about 7.2 million, including 1.4 million African Americans, of whom 1.2 million are enslaved. The population west of the Appalachian Mountains is 1 million.
  • War of 1812 Begins

    The war begins as the United States declares war on Great Britain over issues of borders, trade, freedom of the seas, and the rights of neutrals. In general, the war is supported by westerners and opposed by New Englanders. Indians under Tecumseh fight on the side of the British. Louisiana enters the Union as the 18th State.
  • Presidential Election of 1812

    James Madison is once again elected and Elbridge Gerry was elected as the Vice President. While this was happening, Napoleon attempted to invade Russia and he was very unsuccessful.
  • 1814 Summary

    The British attacked the United States and they burned Washington, D.C. The United States win the Battle of Fort McHenry in Baltimore harbor. Witness of the battle, Francis Scott Key, later then writes " The Star Spangled Banner". Hartford Convention takes place when the federalists opposed to the war of 1812 meet to proposse constitutional revisions. Also, the war of 1812 ends and the Creek War ends as well.
  • Presidential Election of 1816 and More

    The first protective tariff is passed by Congress. Plus, an African Methodist Episcopal Church is established by Rev. Richard Allen in Philadelphia. And, Indiana enters the Union as the 19th state. James Monroe is elected president along with Daniel Tompkins as the vice president.
  • The First Seminole War

    This begins with attacks on the settlers in Florida and Georgia. Also at this time, the New York Stock Exchange is established. Plus Missouri enters the Union finally and is entering in at the 20th state.
  • Summary of 1818

    General Andrew Jackson leads troops into Florida to fight the Seminoles. Connecticut abolishes property ownership as a requirement for voting. The First public elementary Schools open in Boston. Also at this time, Illinois enters the Union as the 21st state. Paul Revere dies in Boston at age 84 ( born 1735 ).
  • McCulloch v. Maryland

    Supreme Court upholds right of federal government to charter a national bank, thus affirming its "implied powers" beyond those stated in the Constitution. The United States acquire Florida from Spain in the Adams-Onis Treaty. There was also a six year economic depression after the Panic of 1819. Alabama now enters the Union as the 22nd state.
  • Fourth Census

    The United States population now totals to about 10 million, including 1.7 million African Americans, of whom 1.5 million are enslaved. The population west of the Appalachian Mountains is 2.2 million. 6 percent of Americans live in cities.
  • Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise is passed by Congress. This allows the admission of Missouri as a slave state, and bans slavery in the Louisiana Territory north of 36 degrees 30'. So pretty much the southern boundary of Missouri.
  • Summary of 1821

    Missouri enters the Union as the 24th state under the Missouri Compromise. It is also a slave state. First American settlers arrive in Texas, led by Stephen Austin. Mass. and N.Y. abolish property qualifications for voting. Peru, Mexico, Venezuela, and Guatemala become independent from Spain.
  • Summary of 1822

    The slave rebellion led by Denmark Vesey is crushed in Charleston, South Carolina. American Colonization Society establishes Monrovia ( Liberia ) to promote emigration of free blacks. Brazil also becomes independent from Portugal.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    Europe is warned not to interfere in Western Hemisphere affairs. Cotton mills begin production in Lowell, Massachusetts, with water - powered machinery.
