    The Compromise of 1877

    This Compromise was put into place to settle the dispute over the Presidential election in which Republican candidate Rutherford B. Hayes won the electoral vote and the election, but Democrat Samuel J. Tilden won the popular vote. This compromise resulted in the last troops being taken out of the south, ending the Reconstruction Era.

    Rutherford B. Hayes' Presidency

    After the controversial election of 1876, Hayes still became president despite democrats saying that the popular vote pushed Tilden in front of him. Hayes' term was during the end of the reconstruction era, and he had to deal with the effects of the Civil War. Hayes also took major steps in stopping corruption from entering government positions, and took strides in promoting civil rights for minorities.

    The Great Railroad Strike

    This was a series of violent protests across the country due to wage cuts from the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Railroad workers were already underpaid, especially considering how dangerous their jobs were, so this was the tipping point for them. These strikes ended after the federal army got involved. More than 100,000 workers participated, but nothing really happened as a result of their efforts.

    Invention of the Lightbulb

    Thomas Edison built his first incandescent light bulb in 1879 after many attempts and after many months. After over 3,000 different designs, Edison finally patented the light bulb in 1879 and again in 1880.

    Chester A. Arthur's Presidency

    Republican candidate Chester A. Arthur became vice president to James A. Garfield, and became president after Garfield was assassinated. During his presidency, Arthur advocated a civil service reform. He is known for advocating tariff relief for businesses, and demanding breaks for taxpayers.

    The Chinese Exclusion Act

    This was a federal law signed by president Chester A. Arthur which prohibited all immigration of the Chinese to America. This was done as a result of racism and prejudice towards the Chinese from the white Americans, as the Chinese laborers took many jobs from Americans.

    Grover Cleveland's 1st Presidency

    Democrat Grover Cleveland is the only president in American history to serve two discontinuous terms. In his first term, Cleveland tried to reduce government spending and fought to have protective tariffs lowered. He was a noninterventionist in foreign policy.

    The Spanish-American War

    This was a conflict between the United States and Spain caused by Cuba's struggle for independence from Spain. The United States became involved, and the sinking of the American battleship USS Maine in the Havana harbor helped push America into declaring war on Spain. The war was brief, and it was extremely one-sided towards the States, and the Treaty of Paris was signed about eight months after the war began, and Cuba gained its independence.
