    Proclimation of 1763
    This proclamation did not allow colonists to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. The British government feared the conflict between colonists and Native Americans would lead to another war. They also could not afford to pay British troops to defend the western lands. Colonists were enraged by this proclamation because they felt they had won the right to settle in the Ohio River Valley after winning the French and Indian War.

    Quartering Act
    The British monarch wanted to enforce the proclamation and keep peace with their Native American allies. King George III decided to keep 10,000 soldiers in the colonies. The Quartering Act was a cost-saving measure that required the colonies to quarter the British soldiers and provide them supplies.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    This law was passed by the Parliament. It required all legal and commercial documents to have an official stamp showing that a tax had been paid. This law basically affected everybody in the colonies.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    Charles Townshend had a plan to raise revenue in the colonies. Parliament had accepted his plan in 1767. It suspended New York's assembly until they had agreed to provide housing for the troops.
  • Tea Act and Boston Tea Party

    Tea Act and Boston Tea Party
    All acts except the tax on tea were repealed. Many people all over the colonies started to protest. A group of men disguised as Native Americans and dumped 342 chests of tea off three boats on December 16, 1773.

    Intolerable Acts
    Parliament passed a series of laws in 1774 originally called the Coercive Acts. These laws were called the Intolerable Acts due to the harsh treatment. The laws punished Massachusetts colonists due to what happened at the Boston Tea Party.
  • Battles of Lexington ans Concord

    Battles of Lexington ans Concord
    The battles that took place at Lexington and Concord were the first battles of the Revolutionary War. On April 19, 1775, 700 British troops reached Lexington and are met by 70 militiamen. The British troops marched to Concord to destroy supplies.
  • Olive Branch Petition

    Olive Branch Petition
    The Olive Branch Petition was a document that states that they would attempt to avoid war with Britain. The Continental Congress had adopted it in 1775. The king declined this petition and found new ways to punish the colonies.
  • Declaration of Independence

    Declaration of Independence
    This statement was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. The committee had Thomas Jefferson compose the document because he was a great writter and was from Virginia. This document stated that the thirteen colonies are no longer apart of the British Empire.
