  • Frank L. Buam publishes The Wizard of Oz

    21,000 copies of this story sold. Originally a story with a populist meaning it evolved into a children's story. Now days instead of an adveture that outlined the populist movement it is a story of a small town girl that gets lost in a strange land with no way home.
  • Assassination of President McKinley

    The President of the United States, William McKinley, was shot and fatally wounded on September 6, 1901, inside the Temple of Music on the grounds of the Pan American Exposition in Buffalo, New York. After his death, Vice-President Theodore Roosevelt becomes the 26th President of the United States.
  • The fil "The Great Train Robbery" is released

    Directed by Edwin S. Porter, this film depicted the robbery of a train where masked bandits stopped the train. They killed 2 people and escaped with the loot only to be caught later.
  • The Wright Brothers make their first flight

    This duo built the first successful airplane. It went 120 feet. They built it because they wanted to be able to do 3 dimensional travel.
  • Upton Sinclair publishes "The Jungle"

    This book gave details about sweat shops revealing the nasty truth nobody wanted to hear.
  • San Francisco Earthquake

    the quake went from Oregon to Nevada It covered approximately 80 kilometers. Killed 3,000 people and destroyed 80% of San Fancisco.
  • Roosevelt Panic

    The stock dropped 50% cuasing many buisnesses to go bankrupt. This allowed J.P Morgan to buy many bank chains.
  • The NAACP is founded

    NAACP stand for the National Assosiation for the Advancement of Colored People. This was ofrmed partly in response to lynching's and tried to get equal rights for colored people.
  • Howard Taft is elected 27th President of the Unoted States

    Theodore Roosevelt handpicked Taft as his successor. TR was sadly disappointed when he failed to perform what he thought was the proper duties and ended up running against Taft.
  • Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire

    This was the 2nd deadliest disaster in NYC a t the time causeing 146 deaths and numerous injuries. This fire started the fight for laws that would regulate conditions and hours in factories as well as fire safety laws.
  • Standard Oil's Monopoly is dissolved

    On this day, the supreme court ruled that the trust Standard Oil be dissolved. The company split into a few small chains like Exxon.
  • Sinking of the Titanic

    The Titanic was thought to be unsinkiable. Apparently an iceberg had other ideas. The massive ship fell prey to the iceberg on the night of April 14th. It sank the next morning taking the lives of about 1,500 people.
  • Woodrow Wilson is elected President of the United States

    This year Wilson wass able to sneak in. Theodore Roosevelt ran against Taft which split the republican party. Wison, being the only democratic nomination, was elected. HE held 42% of the popular votes and 82% of electoral votes.
  • Work finished on the Panama Canal

    The project of proposed by Theodore Roosevelt. It was funded by the U.S. This canal allowed ships to be able to take a short cut through Central America instead of going all the way around South America cutting the time it would take in half.
  • World War I begins

    It is hard to pinpooint the exact cause of the war but the biggest reason would probably be the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Other couses would be mutual defense Alliances, Imperialism, Militarism, and Nationalism.
  • Sinking of the Lusitania

    A war ship that was sunk when a german U-boat sent a torpedo. The ship had slowed to down to navigate through some fog and was hit sinking the ship.
  • United States Enters WW1

    Zimmerman tried to provoke Mexico and Japan into attacking the U.S. It made us mad.
  • World War I ends with Treaty of Versailles

    The treaty would end war betwween Germany and the Allied Powers. Others in the war would sign other treaties but this one really put an end to the fighting.
  • 18th Amendment (Prohibition)

    All liquor (except for medical and religous puposes) was prohibited in the U.S. This law didn't last particularly long considering how much americans like to drink.
  • 19th Amendment (Women's Suffrage)

    thanks to this Amendment women were now allowed to vote. This ability put them on the same level as the freed slaves.
