    On February 14th, 1876, Scottish American inventor Alexander Grahm Bell was gifted a patent for the first ever telephone. This form of communication was much more efficient than the telegraph and paved the way for new advancements.

    The Battle of Little Bighorn

    Lieutenant Colonel George Custer led 700 US soldiers into a battle against the Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and the Arapaho tribes. Custer suffered a major loss, losing 268 men. This was one of the worst US losses in the Great Sioux War.

    The Great Railroad Strike of 1877

    The Great Railroad Strike of 1877 was the first major employee strike in the United States. It was the result of the B&O railroad cutting wages for the third time that year. It lasted for 69 days and resulted in the forming of trade unions and laws involving strikes.

    This act banned all Chinese workers and people from immigrating to the United States. Intended to only last 10 years, it was not repealed until 1943.

    This Act was the first act ever passed that was anti-monopolization. It prohibited any conduct that attempts to monopolize any market. Its main purpose was to prevent the artificial raising of prices of a product by a single company or group of companies that controlled that given market.

    The Wounded Knee Massacre was the massacre of over 250 men, women, and children of the Lakota tribe. It began because the rifle of a member of the Lakota tribe went off during the disarming process and US soldiers began shooting at the tribe, most of which had already been disarmed.

    The Homestead Strike was a strike at Carnegie Steel Works. The occurred between workers and Carnegie Steel as a result of the firing of 3,800 workers. Shots were fired by riot breakers.

    The Spanish American War was a war between Spain and the United States that began because of the sinking of a US battleship in the port of Havana, Cuba. It ended with the Treaty of Paris of 1898 on terms that were more favorable to the United States.
  • The Annexing of Hawaii

    The Annexing of Hawaii

    After the overthrow of the Hawaiin Monarchy and a long series of peace treaties and trade treaties between Hawaii and the United States, Hawaii was annexed by the United States. The use of Pearl Harbor, a United States naval base in Hawaii, for the Spanish American War ultimately led to them being annexed.
