United States Education in the 20th Century

  • Association of American Universities was founded

    Founded to promote high standards for American Universities and so they could better compete with European schools
  • 4-H was established

    Founded in Ohio to promote youth devlopment, became a national program in 1914
  • Smith-Hughes Act was passed

    Act established funding for vocational education programs. Repealed in 1997.
  • SAT is first administered

  • The Great Depression

    Left many educators unemployed. Many schools were closed and federal funding was lost.
  • GI Bill is passed

    GI Bill provided an education for almost 2 million young soldiers. Set a new standard, education was for more than the wealthy.
  • Brown vs. Board of Education

    Ruled that separate schools for those of different races was unequal even if they had the 'same' resources.
