World War I
World War I was a global conflict caused by the Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, involving countries divided into the Allied Powers and Central Powers. It is known for the use of trench warfare and new military technologies. The war ended with the Treaty of Versailles, which put all the blame on Germany with harsh penalties. I knew that WWI began with Franz Ferdinand’s assassination and involved trench warfare. I also knew Germany took all the blame. I did not know Italy was an ally. -
Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
On June 28, 1914, in Sarajevo, Bosnia, Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassinated. He was murdered by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian-Serb nationalist. The event led to the "July Crisis", and the start of World War I. Before our lesson, I did not know any causes for World War I. I now know how the Archduke's death led to a series of war declarations by each side and their allies. Additionally, I am able to connect the event to M.A.I.N., which summarizes the causes of World War I. -

Interwar Period
The Interwar Period was the time between World War I and World War II. It is known as a time of political instability and economic hardship. Many countries struggled to rebuild after WWI, which would only become more difficult during the Great Depression. This period also saw the rise of fascism in Italy and Germany, shaping what would become WWII. Before our lesson I only heard of the Interwar Period. I knew jazz was popular then. But I did not know that the Great Depression was during it. -
Black Tuesday
October 29, 1929, or "Black Tuesday", was the day the US stock market crashed, beginning the Great Depression. Panic selling caused stock prices to fall, wiping out billions in wealth. The crash led to bank failures, unemployment, and a poverty all across the world. Learning of Black Tuesday has given me knowledge on how stock markets work. It has also given me understanding of consequences of free-market capitalism. Lastly, I now have new knowledge on causes for the rise of Nazi Germany. -

Battle of Britain
The Battle of Britain was an arial campaign that took place in 1940. The German Luftwaffe aimed to control British airspace to support a ground invasion. The British military, however, successfully defended the country, marking a turning point in World War II. Before our lessons on World War II, I had not heard of the Battle of Britain. I thought the war had only been fought in Germany and Japan. Also, I now understand how the battle helped show the Allies that the Nazis were not invincible. -

Impact
The World Wars era saw the collapse of empires, and the rise of ideologies like fascism and communism. It also saw many technological advancements, many causing mass casualties and economic devastation. Alongside the creation of the United Nations, the era reshaped international relations, produced decolonization efforts, and set the stage for the Cold War. I knew the Germans lost both World Wars. I knew about the attack on Pearl Harbor too. I did not know the Cold War went until the nineties.
