Count Camillo di Cavour becomes prime minister of Sardinia. He was a very good leader. He wanted to unite Italy by forming alliances.

Cavour new that he needed to defeat Austria. Napoleon (a French emperor) agreed to help him with that. With France and Sardinia working together they quickly defeated Austria.

Together Napoleon and Cavour united Sardinia and Lombardy.

Giuseppe Garibaldi lead a small army of Italian nationalists into Sicily. In battle, Garibaldi always wore a bright red shirt and so did his followers that is why they became known as the red shirts.

The nation was officialy unified and the king of Sardinia became the King of Italy.

The Austrian province of Venetia (containing Venice) became part of Italy.

The Papal States were the only thing left for Italy to take over. This was a little harder because the Pope lived there and he di not want to give his power to the government. Eventually, Iataly got the Papal States from him but the Pope still governed the church and a small area called The Vatican City.
