    US policy that gave economic and military aid to countries threatened by communism

    food, water, medicine, etc. was brought over to help supply the people inhabited in Berlin Germany because of the Soviet blockage (causing them to not get any goods)

    created to help rebuild European countries after WW2

    formed because of the threat of security, posed by the Soviets (for the European and N. American countries)

    ruled the separate law school at the University of Texas failed to qualify as "separate but equal"

    Julius and Ethel Rosenberg are put in jail (soon put to death) because of their involvement with the Soviets by giving them valuable information (could harm the US)

    prevents anyone who has been elected twice from being elected again
  • First H-Bomb detonated by the US

    US set off their first hydrogen bomb, made by various scientists, also gave them a head start in the nuclear building pathway from the Soviets (on marshall islands)
  • Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka

    overturned Plessy v. Ferguson and mandated desegregation
  • Hernandez v. Texas

    Mexican Americans and all other races provided equal protection under the 14th Amendment
  • Jonas Salk invents the Polio Vaccine

    vaccine invented to help stop the spread of polio which was accomplished

    Montgomery Bus Boycott after Rosa Park's arrest

    civil rights protest where African Americans refused to ride city buses in Montgomery, Alabama; protested segregated seating
  • USSR launches Sputnik

    was the first thing to ever be sent to space (satellite)
  • Little Rock Nine integrated into an all-white School in Little Rock, Alabama

    group of nine African American students who enrolled in Little Rock Central High School; showing the need for justice and equality of opportunity for everyone
  • Bay of Pigs Invasion in Cuba

    trained group of Cuban refugees land in Cuba and attempts to end the communist government; failed
  • Berlin Wall built to prevent people from leaving communist East Berlin

    built in 1961 to prevent East Germans from fleeing and caused a lot of problems for the people living in this region (built by Soviets); people were aided by allies for goods
  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuba wanted to start a nuclear war with the U.S., Soviets also placed nuclear missiles in Cuba to scare the United States but all ended in a simple agreement. (US removes missiles from Trkey and Soviets from Cuba)
  • MLK's "I Have a Dream" Speech at the March on Washington

    the massive rally in Washington to urge passage of President Kennedy's civil rights bill; speech was given here and is one of the most known
  • John F. Kennedy is assassinated in Dallas, TX

    he was shot as he was going down a street (in a car), where there was people greeting him
  • Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

    begins undeclared war in Vietnam
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    made discrimination based on race, religion or national origin in public places illegal and required employers to hire on an equal opportunity basis
  • 24th Amendment

    abolishes the poll tax
  • Medicare & Medicaid Established

    governmental health insurance program
  • Voting Rights Act of 1965

    eliminated literacy tests for voters
  • Tet Offensive

    a series of major attacks by communist forces in the Vietnam War (north) where they seized and briefly held some major cities
  • Civil Rights Act of 1968

    prohibited discrimination in the sale or rental of housing

    he was shot at a motel in Memphis, Tennessee
