Transforming Traditional Classroom Instruction to Online Learning

  • The ASK

As an teacher, you are asked to consider implementing a class into an online instruction format. For example, imagine that you are a department head and have been informed at the beginning of the school year, that you will have one teacher less for the following school year. To replace that teacher, your administrator will hire one teacher that will be online teaching all grades on a particular subject that you are familiar with. During the current school year, you are to create a timeline of yo

    Method of Online Delivery

Part of the Strategic Plan should be a decision on a method of online delivery. For quality instruction to occur to meet the standards set by the state and local educational community, there must be a system through which the contents of the lessons can be delivered, monitored, and evaluated.
  • Determining Student Needs

Above all, the most important factor to consider in this huge transformation is the students and what their needs are. The area I would be working with is English Language Arts, which is tested exhaustively and therefore has plenty of data readily available. Through this data, curriculum of different levels could be developed for students at different levels. At the same time there could be project based learning curriculum developed for student whose date shows a need for a challenge beyond the
  • Student Benefits

The biggest benefit for students would be the opportunity for them to work at their own pace and level of proficiency. In the 2010 video Hybrid Classes – A Unique Learning Experience for Students, the Mounds View Public Schools found after starting their online program that students seeking flexibility in schedule, different delivery medium of curriculum, and potential for personalized learning thrived in the online environment. The other benefits are that students are better prepared for post-s

    Curriculum Planning

Planning for the online curriculum would not be any different than creating a curriculum map for the year. Based on the CCSS, units and modules could be built to develop grade appropriate skills in Reading Literature, Reading Information, Writing, Language, and Speaking and Listening.
  • Development of a Strategic Plan

Some major issues must be addressed before the transformation of a traditional classroom ELA class to an online class can take place. The administration and those stakeholders in the district, county, state, or other government agency must deal with these issues before the online program can be launched. The online teacher should be involved in this strategic plan but it cannot be the responsibility of the teacher because of her/his lack of authorization for monetary decision-making.

    Teacher Professional Development

If this online class is going to take place on campus, I am assuming I will not be facilitating this in isolation. There will definitely be a need to be training of other teachers, as well as support staff. These people must be trained to assist students with basic questions about content, lesson instructions, and basic tech issues. This training would probably take place over several months at the participant’s pace.

    Lesson/Unit/Module Design

The actual design of the lessons will not be that difficult. Based on student data and progress, lessons would be assigned online with all components that would be in my classroom.

  • Technology Development

Whether this class is an on-campus or off-campus online class, there are a plethora of issues to be considered with regard to technology. If on-campus, can the building’s electrical, bandwidth, WiFi, and network system handle a large group of student simultaneously online? If not, what can be done to upgrade the systems. If off-campus, how are the system and equipment requirements going to be facilitated? Will enrollment be determined by student availability of a reliable computer and Internet c

For quality instruction to occur to meet the standards set by the state and local educational community, there must be a system through which the contents of the lessons can be delivered, monitored, and evaluated. This is not a decision a teacher in this position can make, but it will affect her/him and their ability to be an effective instructor. Loading Curriculum into LMS

The transformed lessons and units would be loaded into the LMS and ready for the 2014-2015 school year. Refining and adjustments would be made throughout the school year just as in a traditional classroom setting.
  • Launch of Online Class

If the proper planning and groundwork were completed, this online class would be no different than if I taught in face-to-face. The CCSS curriculum would be the same, the quality of my instruction would be the same, and hopefully the students’ experience would be the same.
