Lookout Frederick Fleet spotted an iceberg dead ahead. The iceberg struck the Titanic on the starboard (right) side of her bow.

The first lifeboat was picked up by the Carpathia. 4:10am

The front area of the ship had 14 feet of water poured in. Orders were given to expose lifeboats and get passengers and staff to safety when the captain requested assistance over the radio. Of the estimated 2,227 people on board, hardly half could fit in the lifeboats. 11:50pm-12:05am

Children and women were loaded first. As soon as the Carpathia heard the distress call, she set sail to rescue the people. Safely lowered was the first lifeboat. Although it had a capacity for 65 passengers, only 28 had gotten on board. This time one of the eight distress rockets had been launched.

Following its sinking on April 14–15, 1912, the Titanic generated a law-making frenzy that resonated throughout the whole world. The first International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) was adopted in 1914 as a result of this fervour.

Passengers arrived in Southampton and began boarding the ship. This was between 9:30-11:30am.
