  • Regulation 17 (-2), Political

    Regulation 17 (-2), Political

Regulation 17 was regressing because it further alienated the French-Canadian and stripped them of their language in the education system. It was a way of forcing them to use the English language since education is a big necessity to all kids.
  • War Measure Act (-1), Political

    War Measure Act (-1), Political

The War Measure Act gave the federal government the ability to take away human rights in a time of war. This is regressing because it gave all power to the government resulting with the people having no say in the government's choices, laws, and directions during the war. However, it did keep order in the country
  • Second Battle of Ypres (-2), Political

Second Battle of Ypres (-2), Political

The Second Battle of Ypres was where the Germans’ first used poisonous gas as a weapon. This was significant because this weapon has never been used before. Francis Pegahmagabow, a soldier who fought in this battle, witnessed soldiers foaming at the mouth and gasping for air. Although he survived, his battalion lost almost half his men in the span of three days of fighting. I think this is regressing because many soldiers lost their lives due to the newly introduced weapon.

Lt. Col. Borden's Letter (-2), Social

Lt. Col. Borden’s Letter was sent to all school kids in Nova Scotia telling kids he needed them to help him recruit 3500 soldiers to fight in the war. This is regressing because he manipulated these children by using his position of power to make them believe that there were tragic consequences if the task was not complete.
  • The Wartimes Elections Act (+1), Social

The Wartimes Elections Act (+1), Social

The Wartimes Elections Act granted women in the armed forces as well as female relatives of military men the right to vote in the election due to the men being in war. This was very important because this was the first step to getting women's right to vote in future elections. However, this act it took away the right to vote for people that immigrated to Canada from "enemy" countries. This is progression because this is the first time that women have been given the ability to vote in Canada
  • Military Service Act (0), Political

    Military Service Act (0), Political

The Military Service Act made all male citizens aged 20 to 45 enlist through the end of the war. There was a lot of debate on conscription. Some supported it because they knew that war efforts required more soldiers, while others did not. I think it could go either way and I understand both points of view.
  • The Income War Tax Act (-2), Economical

The Income War Tax Act (-2), Economical

The Income War Tax Act was a consequence of the war because of the high demand of money it had on the country. At the peak of the war, Canada's national debt sat at $1.2 billion. The government had to turn to its people to help pay for the cost of the war. This Act introduced personal income tax and people that did not submit a tax return were fined $100 per day. This is regressing because the government took away the money that its people have earned in order to pay off Canada's debt.

The Halifax Explosion was a tragic event that killed more than 1700 people. The Halifax harbour was always busy trying to meet the demands of the war. As a consequence, two ships carrying war supplies and explosive material collided creating a massive explosion. This was regressing because this event caused a lot of damage to the city and the loss of many people and children.

    Llandovery Castle Sinking (-2), Political

The Llandovery Castle was a hospital ship that was torpedoed and sunk by a German U-boat (submarine). It killed almost all passengers on board and only one life boat got away. This is regressing because it was a horrible incident and we lost many nurses and soldiers on board.
