    One of the first peices of legislation from the common wealth era. These acts were designed to tighten the governments control over trade inbetween England, its colonies and the rest of the world.

    Boston Newsletter First Published
    Created by John Campbell. He was a bookseller and a postmaster of Boston. He printed it on what was known as a half sheet.
  • Stamp Act Passed

    Stamp Act Passed
    The Stamp Act was passed by British Parliament. It required all all American colonists to pay tax on every printed peice of paper they used. The money collected was used to help pay the costs of defending and protecting the American frontier.
  • Quartering Act Passed

    Quartering Act Passed
    The Quartering Act of 1765 required the colonies to house British soldiers in barracks provided by the colonies. If the barracks were too small to house all the soldiers, then localities were to accommodate the soldiers in local inns, livery stables, ale houses, victualling houses, and the houses of sellers of wine.
  • Son of Liberty Formed

    Son of Liberty Formed
    It was a group of shop keepers and artisans who called themselves The Loyal Nine, preparing for aggitation againts The Stamp Act. As the group grew it became known as The Sons of Liberty.

    Common Sense Published
    Published in 1776, Common Sense challenged the authority of the British government and the royal monarchy. The plain language that Paine used spoke to the common people of America and was the first work to openly ask for independence from Great Britain.
