    Colonial Period

    The roots of American education began with the Jamestown colony, the first permanent english settlement in North America.
  • Old Deluder Satan Act

    Also known as the Massachusetts Act of 1674 arose from this grim educational landscape. This law is designed to produce citizens who uderstood the households to hire a teacher of reading and writing.
  • Kids in school

    William Berkeley the aristocratic governor of Virginia supported the idea that poor whites, females, and minorities such as native americans and african americans were excluded from schools, and in 1671 railed against both free public education and access to books.
  • Education

    The colonial period shaped todays education.
  • Period: to

    Early National Period

    Durning the 45 years from 1175-1820, however the seperate colonies became the United States of America, and this country shaped its future through the constitution and the Bill of Rights, as you see in the next section.
  • Federal Goverment

    Passing the Land Ordinance of 1785, the federal goverment established a role for itself in public education. The nfluence of these actions are still around in today's schools.
  • U.S. Constitution

    Written in 1787 and adoped in 1789 played a major role in shaping the educational system you'll teach in today. With 27 ammendments the first 10 known as the Bill of Rights.
  • Ten Amendment

    This amendment was ratified. This amendment was important for two reasons. It implicitly removed the federal goverment from a central role in running and operating schools. Second, it passed the responsibility on to the individual states.

    Common School Movement

    The orgigins of all these structures and policies occurred during the common school speriod, from 1820-1865
  • Education for All

    Changes began to occur that marked the beginning of the comon school movement, a historic attempt to make children education available to all children in the United States.
  • Age of the Common Man

    Historians describe this period as the "Age of the Common Man" for two reasons Andrew Jackson hero of War of 1812 was elected president, Also westward expansion provided opportunities for the poor and landless to star over by pulling up stakes and heading west
  • Horace Mann

    A lawyer turned educator was a key figure in the common school movement. Under his leadership Massachusetts became the leader of education in the United States

  • New Jersey

    This state was the last state to eliminated the requirement that parents pay for their children's elementary education.
  • Civil Rights Act of 1964

    This act which prohibited discrimination against students on the basis of race, color, or national origin in all institutions receiving federal funds.
  • Head Start

    It has two major goals to stimulate the academic achievement and development of low-income preschoolers. Second, to educate and involve parents in the education of their children.
