    Bought from France. The Louisiana Territory cost 15 million and in terms of US geography doubled size of US. Thomas Jefferson's ideas about the constition becomes loose constructionist. In 1804, Jefferson sent Lewis and Clark to explore the new territory.

    Lewis & Clark Expedition
    When they and the 33 other men making up the Corps of Discovery departed from their camp near St. Louis, Missouri. The first portion of the expedition followed the route of the Missouri River during which, they passed through places such as present-day Kansas City, Missouri and Omaha, Nebraska.

    Ended the War of 1812, fought between Great Britain and the United States. By terms of the treaty, all conquered territory was to be returned, and commissions were planned to settle the boundary of the United States and Canada.

    Battle of New Orleans
    The British marched against New Orleans, hoping that by capturing the city they could separate Louisiana from the rest of the United States. Pirate Jean Lafitte, however, had warned the Americans of the attack, and the arriving British found militiamen under General Andrew Jackson strongly entrenched at the Rodriquez Canal.     Martin Van Buren was the president. An estimated 4,000 died from hunger, exposure and disease. The journey became an eternal memory as the "trail where they cried".

    Annexation of Texas
    A few weeks later Santa Anna orders executions of Texans at Goliad. Sam Houston led a group of Texans and surprised/defeated the Mexicans at the Battle of San Jacinto. Mexicans recognize Texan independence. Texas is annexed (admitted) to the Union by Prez John Tyler in 1845…led to a big debate over the possible expansion of slavery into the Texas area. Mexico stated that annexation of Texas by U.S. meant war.
