Ap Bac
At the battle of Ap Bac the even with American help, the South Vietnamese could not defeat the Veit Cong. The vicotry for the oppossing side meant they had more hope and more people joined the fight for their side. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
U.S. congress passes the Golf of Tonkin Resolution. This gives the president (Johnson) the ability to take whatever action needed in the war. This is of great importance because now more war efforts can be expanded. -
Operation Rolling Thunder
Operation Rolling Thunder was approved by president Johnson. This was a long lasting bombing effort that was focused on North Vietnam to stop supporting the guerrillas in the south. This was an important event because it showed the expansion of the help of the U.S. in this war. -
North Vietnam's Transport Systems
Americans target North Vietnam's transport systems. They hit roads, rail roads, bridges, and supply depots. This is significant because with damamged or no way to be transported it will affect the war and potentially change plans for the oppossing side. -
U.S. Offers Aid for Peace
U.S. offers North Vietnam economic aid for peace, but it is rejected. American combat is increased and more troops are sent over. Korea and Australia join as allies showing support. Operation Starlite is launched. The United States lands a huge victory in this battle. This win came because there was going to be an attack on the U.S. so they launched this ground battle. The victory for the U.S. is significant. -
Attacks on North Vietnam's Airfields
America starts attacking North Vietnam's airfields. After one year all, but one base has been hit. This is significant because it shows the power America is bringing to this war and they are dominating. -
Central Highlands of South Vietnam
Americans come upon North Vietnam in the Central Highlands of South Vietnam and there are days of fighting that leave many North Vietnamese dead. This is another signifcant hit on North Vietnam. -
Khe Sanh End
This is the end of the battle of Khe Sanh. Up until this point, this was the longest battle of this war so far. The United States clearly held the victory leaving thousands dead. -
President Nixon Takes Office
He wants to achieve "Peace with Homor" in the Vietnam war. He wants to withdraw half a million U.S. troops. This is significant because it is a huge turn in the war with a new president in office. -
Withdraw of 25,000 Troops
"President Nixon meets with South Vietnamese President Nguyen Van Thieu on Midway Island in the Pacific, and announces that 25,000 U.S. troops will be withdrawn immediately". This is significant because with the withdrawal of troops the U.S. is showing they are leaving the war in a way. President Nixon is on his way to ending the war. -
Ceasefire
All parities in the Vietnam war sign a ceasefire. This is significant because it is the end to war the war. No more battles or attacks will occur. -

The last of the combat soldiers leave Vietnam. This is officially the end of the war for the United States.
