    After two previous failures, Germany successfully launches their V-2 rocket. It is the first man-made object to achieve sub-orbital spaceflight. It reaches an altitude of 100km.

    The United States launches its first American designed rocket. This was known as the Wac Corporal. The rocket reaches the edge of space at an altitude of 50 miles. This was launched in New Mexico.

    Fruit flies become the first animals in space. There ae launced in a
    V-2 rocket in New Mexico at White Sands Proving Ground. The flight reaches adn altitude of 60 miles.

    The first US satellite is in orbit. It will discover the Earth's radiation belt.

    The first weather successful satellite is launched by the US. It was called Tiros 1. It was launched by NASA to try and study the Earth.
