Timeline of Revenue Acts

  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act

    The Sugar Act was enacted on April 5th, 1764. This act added three cents to any pound of sugar. The colonists were not happy with this. They believed that because they didn't have say they should not have to pay. However, the British governmet liked it because it prevented people from buying goods from other places, and most importantly made them money.
  • Currency Act

    Currency Act

    The Currency Act was enacted on September 1st, 1764. This act was created to control the colonial curreny system, and stop colonies from printing their own money. Most colonists did not like this act because they couldn't print their own money. However, the government liked this because they had control over curency and were making some profit.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act was enacted on March 3rd, 1765. This act required american colonists to pay a tax for a stamp on every piece of printed paper, such as newspapers, legal documents, magazines, and even playing cards. Colonists hated this act, to get this act gone they did things like harrasing tax collectors, debating, mobs, and many other things. Parlimentary voted to repeal the act in march of 1766.
  • Townshed Act

    Townshed Act

    The Townshed Act was enacted June 6th, 1767. This act was a way to collect money by applying custom duties on tea, paper, glass, and lead. Colonist reacted to this by not buying tea unless it was smuggled, they also believed they didn't have to follow this because they didn't have say in it. The government still continued to tax items wthout the colonists consent
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act

    The Tea Act was enacted on April 27th, 1773. This act was designed to expand the East India Company which was going downhill financially. Colonists were fed up with taxations and refused to unload the tea. The tea was eventuallty dumped into the boston harbor. The governement ended up getting the worse end of this because they ended up with lots of debt.
