  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act

    Description- Cut the duty on foreign molasses from 6 to 3 pence per gallon, retained a high duty on foreign refined sugar, prohibited the importation of all foreign rum.
    Colonists Reaction- With a protest.
    British Gov't Reaction- Refused to listen and placed a three-penny duty.
  • The Stamp Act

    The Stamp Act

    Description- Required the colonists to pay a tax, represented by a stamp, on various forms of papers, documents, and playing cards.
    Colonists Reaction- They were angered by the Stamp act and quickly acted to oppose it.
    British Gov't Reaction- They believed that the colonists were being greedy and ungrateful.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act

    Description- Stated that the Great Britain would house its soldiers in American barracks and public houses.
    Colonists Reaction- They disputed the legality of this Act because it violated the Bill of Rights of 1689.
    British Gov't Reaction- Parliament suspended the Province of New York's Governor and legislature.
  • Boston Port Act

    Boston Port Act

    Description- Closed the Port from all commerce and ordered the citizens of Boston to pay a large fine to compensate for the tea thrown into the river during the Boston Tea Party.
    Colonists Reaction- They didn't view the Act as just Boston's problem, they believed that all colonies had to unit against taxation or they would lose their rights.
    British Gov't Reaction- They reestablished British authority in the colonies.
  • Intolerable Act

    Intolerable Act

    Description- A series of four laws passed by the British Parliament to punish the colony of Massachusetts Bay for the Boston Tea Party.
    Colonists Reaction- They responded with a show of unity.
    British Gov't Reaction- They condemned the Intolerable Acts as a violation of the British Law.
