Timeline of Revenue Acts

  • Sugar Act

    Sugar Act
    The Sugar Act was passed in 1764. All the money collected went towards the British Troops. This act raised the tax on sugar and molasses. The colonists did not approve of this. They started many boycotts. This eventually lead to the appeal of the Sugar Act, by the British Government.
  • Quartering Act

    Quartering Act
    The Quartering act was passed on March 24, 1765. This act required American colonists to provide food and shelter for all the British troops. The colonists held a strongly negative opinon on this act. Colonists thought it was unfair for them to pay so much on a growing army. This act was not officially repealed but was updated.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    The Stamp Act was an act imposed on November 1, 1765. This was an act that required colonists to pay for every piece of printed paper that they needed to use. The Virginia House of Burgesses argued that Americans and English people had the same rights. This act was stopped in March of 1766.
  • Declaratory Act

    Declaratory Act
    The Declaratory act was passed on March 18, 1766. The Parliament repealed the Stamp Act on the condition the the Declaratory Act could be passed. The Declaratory act was the right to bind colonies in all cases what so ever. The colonists begand boycotting and stopped supporting anything that had to do with the crown.
  • Townshend Act

    Townshend Act
    The Townshend Act was an act imposed on June 9th of 1767. This act was a tax on things such as glass, paper, lead, and tea. The colonists did not like this tax. They set up many boycotts which eventually lead to the Townshend Act being repealed.
