Timeline of Key Changes in the Process for Identification

  • Tier 1

Evidence-based curriculum that is created to help an individualized group of students. This is not a pre-made intervention. Differentiate instruction to provide specific needs for students.
  • Tier 2

Drill, practice, and cumulative review are key factors in tier 2. in this tier, the teacher is still helping a concentrated group of students. The teacher progress monitors, gives the students more adult attention and more positive feedback.
  • Tier 3

Here the students enter the learning environment with different skill sets, and an individual response to intervention. This tier is much more individualized. Lessons are taught based on unique and dependent social learning and context. To reach desired outcomes in school, some students may require additional or unique instructional strategies or interventions beyond those typically available to other students.
  • Step 1- Evaluating a student

LEA initiates a referral or reevaluation based off of the tier 1,2,3 data and progress monitoring data. This referral has to be signed by the parent/guardian.
  • Step 2-Parent gives permission

Parent signs and then the team looks at the data further to determine if the student is to be tested for special education services and eligibility.
  • Step 3-looking at the information

Further information may be needed to test the child for eligibility. The team would reconvene to discuss the findings. If the team has enough information, they would proceed with testing for eligibility.
  • Step 4-testing

Testing would take place by all the members of the team. Observations would be included on this evaluation. The team, parent and student would come together to review the information.
  • Step 5- Case Conference Review Initial

The team, parent, and student would meet to discuss findings and setermine if the student is in need of services under a specific eligibility. If the student needs services, the team would talk with all people involved and complete a plan that is the best fit for the student.
  • Step 6-IEP plan set

IEP plan is put into place and the student recieves services that are individualized to their specific needs.
