    National Party
    The Afrikaners National Party rises to power and enacts apartheid which segregates whites from non whites. Apartheid would eventally prove to envoke a lot of racial conflict
  • Population Restriction Act

    Population Restriction Act
    Population Restriction act separates people into 3 racial groups, whites, colourd (Mixed), and black. Later the group area act sets aside different communites for each of the three groups.
  • Abolition of Passes Act

    This act ends the "pass" system but requires all blacks to carry refrence books with different items of idetification. People would often burn them in protest.
  • Reservation of Separate Amenities Act

    This legalizes the separate but not necessarily equal places in public ofr blacks, coloured, and white people that have been around since the beginning of Apartheid and have just now been legalized.
  • The ANC Radicalizes

    The ANC Radicalizes
    Part of the ANC, lead by Nelson Mandela, works with others to help launch an armed resistance in South Africa against Apartheid and its ways. This was the first major Anti-Apartheid action so far.
  • Sharpeville Massacre

    Sharpeville Massacre
    More than 70 South Africans were killed in Sharpeville after refusing to have or carry with them their refrence books which was required by law.

    This was a special committee that was formed because of everything happening in South Africa due to Apartheid. The committee supports that peacful change of the laws and segregation is Sout Africa

    Nelson Mandela to Prison
    Nelson Mandela was senteced to life in proson for his involvement in Anti-Apartheid activism.
  • Henrik Verwoerd Assissinated

    Henrik Verwoerd Assissinated
    Henrik was assassinated, he was known as the father of Apartheid.

    The popularity of anti-apartheid grows in momentum and support. This is happening in part because of all of the whites who were starting to take part.

    70s Resettlements

    Over 3 million South Africans were forced to move and resettle in places called "reserves"
  • Soweto Uprising

    Soweto Uprising
    Black South African students began to protest the education discrimination between whitess and non-whites. Over 500 hundred people were killed and thousands of others were injured. This was in part because of the racial discrimiation of education set by Apartheid.

    The president P.W. Botha declared a state of emergency and Martial Law was enacted. Over 4 years thousands of blacks were detained and or killed.

    The U.S. Calls for Sanctions in South Africa
    The U.S. passes and act called the Comprehensive Anti-Apartheid Act which calls for sanctions against South Africa. This put in place becuse of the Apartheid and what it caused.
  • Apartheid Laws Relaxed or Repealed

    P.W. Botha is replaced as president of the state by F.W. de Klerk and he starts to relax and repleal some of the segregational laws.
  • Nelson Mandela Freed

    Nelson Mandela Freed
    Nelson Mandela had been serving a life sentense from his involvement in anti-apartheid activism since 1964. However he was freed aong with 5 other activist by De Klerk and the ban of the ANC also lifted
  • First Democratic Elections

    First Democratic Elections
    The first democratic elections for president of South Africa were held and Nelson Mandela was unanimously selected. He soon after ended Apartheid and the segregation that it brought.
