Timeline: Nullification Crisis

  • The Tariff of 1828

    The Tariff of 1828 was also called the Tariff of Abomination and it raised the rate up to 50% on goods. The tax on foreign goods would make it more difficult in the South because it was trying to protect Northern and Western agriculture.
  • Revision of The Tariff of 1828

    The Revision of the Tariff of 1828 was to give back to the South since they were not being as protected as the North and West they wanted to make them feel better but it didn't necessarily work as planned.
  • South Carolina Ordinance of Nullification

    The South Carolina Ordinance of Nullification was making both tariffs null and void within the state. It also allowed the use of armed forces to protect officials and just to be better enforced.
  • Proclamation to the People of South Carolina

    The Proclamation to the People of South Carolina was also known as the "Nullification Proclamation" and it was issued by Andrew Jackson and it was basically just the right to nullify a federal law.
  • Compromise Tariff

    The Compromise Tariff of 1833 was to resolve the Nullification Crisis. It made sure that all tariff rates over 20% would be brought down 1/10 every 2 years. The Compromise Tariff was finally accepted by South Carolina which ended the nullification crisis.
