Lakota, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tripes where sick of the US taking land and the 7th calvary underestimated their numbers causing them 268 deaths and 55 wounded. This was a huge moral boost for the natives. -

Battle of Wounded Knee
US army went to disarm the Lakota before they went to a reservation, but shots were fired. US troops were supported by 4 Hotchkiss guns. (first "automatic" firearm) 150 Lakota natives died, and 25 us troops were lost.
