    Governor George Wallace served four terms as Governor of Alabama from 1962-82. He tried to stop a black couple from entering the University of Alabama in 1963, a time in which integration was being forced on the southern states. While at a rally in Maryland, Governor Wallace is shot by Arthur Bremer, which put his political advances in Alabama at a halt. Wallace died in 1998, only two years shy of the new millennium.
