The Berlin Wall Goes Up
It was built by the German Democratic Republic to keep its population from leaving East Berlin that was controlled by the Soviets to West Berlin that was controlled by the Western Allies. It was about 27 miles long with barbed wire, made with cinder blocks, attacking dogs, and 55,000 landmines. Fleeing Germans included skilled workers, professionals, and intellectuals. About 5,000 East Germans were able to get across the Berlin wall safely. While 5,000 others were captured and 191 were killed. -

Analysis: It symbolized the containment of the East people from the West during the Cold War. As well as the division of East from West Germany and Eastern and Western Europe. -
US sends a man to the moon
John F. Kennedy wanted to beat the Soviets in the space race. The Soviets had already excited people with the cosmonaut as the first explorer in space. The Vice President known as Lyndon Johnson, recommended that leaders in NASA with a strong effort could beat the Soviets by sending a man on the moon or around the moon. They first started with probes to scan anything they could. Along with Project Mercury preparing this explore. This lead to astronaut Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin walking on the moon. -
US sends a man to the moon PT 2
Analysis: Between the Soviet Union and the US it was a space race to be the one to excite the people. The Soviets were already in the lead with the Russian astronaut who circled the Earth. This caused a huge competition between who could do something so impressive beyond Earth. -
1980 Olympic Hockey game between the Soviet Union and the United States
The Soviets were known to be one of the top dogs and that America had no chance. This event is known as the "Miracle on Ice" because it truly changed peoples lives. The Soviets were a four-time defending gold-medal winning team at the XIII Olympic Winter Games. In the game against the Americans they lost by 4-3. They hadn't lost a game since 1968. The American team was seeded seventh. The outcome was unexpected and a crazy remembrance in history. -
1980 Olympic Hockey game between the Soviet Union and the United States
Analysis: The US and the Soviets were highly competitive and the win against the Soviets was like a win against communism and towards democracy. To Moscow and Washington it showed could communism or democracy produce better athletes and had a huge reflection on the Cold War.
