    Congress debated the Wilmot Proviso
    This was a bill that would ban slavery in the new territories acquired from Mexico. Congress thought states would give the South to much power. Northeners were for it but the Southerns did not agree. southerns faught saying that they had the right for slaves in new territories beacuse slaves were property and the Constitution protects property. The wilmot Proviso was never passed.

    California asked to enter the union as a free state. Southners believed thought it should be a slave state considering most of it lays south of the Missouri Compromise line.
