Louisiana Purchase
The United States purchased territory from France in 1803, the purchase acquired the United States about 828,000 square miles, doubling the size. -
War of 1812
The United States fought against Great Britain. Some of the causes were the British attempts to restrict the U.S in trade and the U.S desire to expand. The Treaty of Ghent on February 17, 1815 ended the war and the U.S won. -
Missouri Compromise
The U.S Senate and House of Representatives attempted to maintain balance between the states that were free and the states that weren’t. -
Indian Removal Act
Trail of Tears, the government forced Indians to leave their native land and walk hundreds of miles to a specific territory across the Mississippi River. -
California Gold Rush
The rush was begun by the finding of gold nuggets in early 1848 in Sacramento Valley. The news spread caused thousands of gold miners to travel to San Fransisco. -
Gadsden Purchase
An agreement between the United States and Mexico, the U.S agreed to pay Mexico $10 million for a 29,670 square mile portion of Mexico. -
Civil War
Begun after tensions over slavery, westward expansion and states’ rights. The costliest and deadliest war fought on American soil, 620,000 soldiers died and millions more injured. The Confederate surrendered in 1865. -
15th Amendment is Ratified
This amendment granted Black men the right to vote. However, this didn’t stop the discriminatory practices that were used to prevent blacks to exercise their right. -
James A. Garfield Shot
Four months into his administration President James A. Garfield is shot by Charles J. Guiteau. -
Spanish-American War
Caused by conflict between the United States and Spain, this war ended Spanish colonial rule in the U.S and the U.S gained territories in the western Pacific and Latin America.
