    The Wilmot Proviso Act - proposal to prohibit slavery in territories acquired in Mexican War (McPherson, 53.) This showed how the country was divided with the north not wanting to extend slavery and the south feeling the opposite
  • Compromise of 1850

    There was a division between the north and south states. This was due partly to the north freeing slave and the south keeping them.
  • The Battle of Cristiana

    The Battle of Cristiana - when a group search for fugitive slaves was met with armed resistance by abolitionists, considered by some to be first battle of the Civil War (McPherson, 84)
  • Convention with Georgia

    South Carolina and Mississippi to discuss remaining in the Union.
  • Publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Publication of Uncle Tom's Cabin - novel that stirred the emotions and led many people to believe that slavery was inhumane (90, McPherson) This book was very influential as far as letting people see the evils of slavery.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    It separated the Louisiana purchase into two areas Kansas and Nebraska.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott Decision (McPherson, p.107) This decision that said African Americans are not citizens of the U.S., horrified those hoping for an end to slavery.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    Lincoln Douglas Debates ( Varon,315) These debates very important because they make “stars” of both men and showed how deep the divide on slavery was between the north and the south.
  • John Brown's Raid

    John and his people took the citizens along with seizing the federal army and arsenal.
  • Election of Abraham Lincoln
