In North America, Britain's biggest rival was France. Britain controlled/ruled colonies on the Atlantic seaboard while France controlled a vast territory that extended from the St. Lawrence River to the Gulf of Mexico. In 1745, the 1.5 million British colonial population grew. British colonists outnumbered the 70,000 French. The British often treated the American Indians very disrespectfully/harshly and did very little to stop the settlers from taking the Indian's land. The french treated most American Indians with respect because they needed allies. The French built forts and trading posts along the Great Lakes and down the Ohio and Mississippi rivers.

Europeans compete for American Indian Allies
Each war that happened between England and France was followed by a treaty that never resolved anything. Great Brian did not want the French from North American Indians and to do this, the British needed to neutralize the great French advantage. If one empire won a total victory, the American Indians would lose their freedom and receive harsh treatment from the victors.
