Timeline: 1850-1861

  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was a book that was published to show the viewpoints from a slave. They did this because they wanted everyone to know the harsh conditions they worked in and to encourage slavery to stop.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    The Kansas Nebraska Act was created to take away the Missouri Compromise line, popular sovereignty, and create new territories.
  • Republican Party

    This was created to prevent slavery from expanding.
  • Bloody Kansas

    The Bloody Kansas was pro-slavery and anti-slavery having fights to find out if Kansas should be a free state or not.
  • John Brown

    He was a widely known abolitionist that advocated against slavery. He was involved in the issues in the Bloody Kansas and he tried to start a slave rebellion at Harpers Ferry.
  • Election 1856

    This election showed how divided the nation was at this point.
  • Brooks-Sumner Incident

    Sumner was giving a speech which offended Brooks and Sumner got beat with a cane 🤪.
  • Dred Scott

    Dred Scott was a slave. He sued his owner, but didn't win the court case since he wasn't a free man and they ruled the Missouri Comprise unconstitutional.
  • House Divided Speech

    In this speech Abraham Lincoln stated that since they ruled the Missouri Compromise unconstitutional slavery was now able to be extended into the North.
  • Lincoln Douglas Debates

    This debate was between Abraham Lincoln and Douglas basically at the end they concluded that popular sovereignty could prevent slavery from spreading.
  • Harpers Ferry

    John Brown raided the Harpers Ferry in order to get the weapons and arm the slaves in order to rebel.
  • LeCompton Constitution

    This is the constitution made by Kansas and stated no free African American could come into the state and protected slavery rights.
  • Election 1860

    This election showed how divided the nation was.
  • Secession

    This is whenever all the states started to leave the union.
  • Lincoln's 1st Inaugural Address

    This was written to keep the states from leaving the union.
