  • Treaty of Kanghwa

    Treaty of Kanghwa
The Treaty of Kanghwa was the first treaty that Japan made to open up Korea's port and to modernize Korea. The cause was Japanese rule over Korea. They wanted to remove Korea from isolation. The effects of the Treaty were that Japan controlled Korea more and more and worried China. The Treaty was made unequal as well. It ended the Chosun Dynasty as well. It is significant because it shows that Japan was the major power in Asia after they modernized plus Korea was isolated and weak at this time.
  • Tonghak Rebellion

    Tonghak Rebellion
The Tonghak Rebellion was a rebellion by the peasant class of Korea against the corrupt government and government officials. It was an anti-feudal, anti-government movement. The main causes were the corruption of the government officials and the yangban class. In the 19th century, the peasants of Korea were mistreated and forced to pay extremely large taxes. The peasants had earlier uprisings, but they were all crushed by the government forces. The Tonghak Rebellion was the largest of them all.
  • Tonghak Rebellion (continued)

The effects and aftermath of the Tonghak Rebellion were that the rebellion failed, and many peasants were killed. However, although the rebellion failed, it is significant to the annexation of Korea by Japan because it showed how Korea was in unrest and led to Japan's conquering of Korea since they were unorganized and in turmoil.
  • Sino-Japanese War

    Sino-Japanese War
The Sino-Japanese War was fought between Qing China and Meiji Japan over the control of Korea, which was at that time a Chinese tribute state. The cause was the growing strength and modernization of Japan, and the destabilization and deterioration of China. Japan wanted Korea to no longer be a vassal state to China, so that it could take over instead. The effects of the Sino-Japanese war was that Japan came out victorious, humiliating the "great" China and "freeing" Korea from China's control.
  • Sino-Japanese War (continued)

The significance of this event is that because of this war, Korea was set free from China's control, which led to the availability for Japan to take over and annex Korea. If Korea was still under China, then Japan would've been unable to annex Korea.
  • Russo-Japanese War

    Russo-Japanese War
