As a kid he attended a private school when his family moved to port Huron, Michigan. His teacher deemed that Thomas was a "difficult" student. His mother pulled him away from school and started teaching him at home. As he got into his thirty's he attended a school called Cooper Union from 1875-1879.

The electric pen was a primitive version of a coping machine. When a person were to write with the pen on a piece of paper, the pen would make tiny wholes creating a stencil.

There were many difficulties when trying to get the building up and running because there were problems with the wiring, the generators, and the other parts of the system.
