The Beginning
Esperanza moves to Mango street and doesn't like it there. She wishes she lived in a nicer neighborhood in a big house with her family. -
Esparanza's Hopes
Louise's cousin gives Esperanza a ride and then they have the cops behind them, they jump out of the car and and the Louise's cousin gets arrested. Esperanza feels safe in her neighborhood because they all have dark skin even if there is crime and cops chasing them. Esparanza feels like she truly belongs amongst the neighbors but feels like she has more potential and is worth more and she hopes to come back to help families on Mango Street after she reaches her goals. -
The Canteen
Esperanza gets jealous of the kids that get to eat in the canteen at school. She instead has to eat at her house. She also gets made fun of for having to eat rice sandwiches. -
Esperanza gets a Job
Esperanza gets a job and she mets this boy there, and they have lunch together. Esperanza goes in to give him a hug and the boy kisses her. -
Death
Esperanza's grandfather passes away and she gets very depressed. Soon after she makes fun of her aunt because she has a disease that makes her g blind but then her aunt dies and she feel s really bad about it. -
Relationships
Esperanza meets this boy she really likes him but he has a girlfriend Esperanza really wants a relationship like theirs but can't seem to get one. -
The Trees
Esperanza thinks that the 4 trees outside are the only things in this world that can truly understand and relate to her. They are skinny and not perfect just like she is. She feels like the trees symbolize her life physically and mentally at this stage in her life. -
Dream House
Esperanza makes a wish to have a big house, she never gets the big house in the book but she reassures herself she will achieve hat house one day. -
Roots
Esperanza encounters a girl names Sally, sally is the most wanted girl in school by all of the boys. Esperanza is asked by Minerva for help because Minerva is getting abused by her husband. Esperanza says that no matter where she ends up in life she won't forget where she came from. -
A Sad Ending
Sally starts to stay with Esperanza because Sally's father beats her as well. Sally ends up getting married. Esperanza gets raped by a boy.
