"T'was the Night Before Christmas" Tradition Begins
I don't remember my mom reading to us very much but I do remember her reading us "T'was the Night Before Christmas every year on Christmas Eve.
  • Started Kindergarten

    Started Kindergarten
In Kindergarten, "storytime" was my favorite part of the day! I loved learning to read! The books I remember most are "Stone Soup", "Millions of Cats", and "The ABC Bunny".
  • Tutoring Brother

    Tutoring Brother
My younger brother had difficulty reading and failed the first grade because of it. So my mom made me read with him after school every day for the whole school year! This was when I decided I wanted to be a teacher.
  • 2nd Grade - School Book Fair

2nd Grade - School Book Fair
I loved going to the school book fair and looking at all the books!
  • 3rd Grade - SRA Reading Labs

3rd Grade - SRA Reading Labs
The SRA (Scholastic Reading Achievement) program was a system of folders, workbooks, and glossy laminated cards used to teach reading in a self-guided and graduated way. There were passages to read on laminated cards in a color-coded progression of increasing levels of difficulty and questions to answer. These almost seemed to replace books and were really just "busy work".
  • 4th Grade - Young Authors' Award

4th Grade - Young Authors' Award
I won first place in my school for my book, "The Day the Pac Men Came to Life". My book was "published" and added to the school library so that other students could check it out.
  • 5th Grade - Judy Blume Books

5th Grade - Judy Blume Books
At the end of 4th grade, my teacher read us "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" and for the next year or more, I was hooked on Judy Blume books! I read the "Fudge" series, "Blubber", Iggie's House", "Otherwise Known as Sheila the Great", "Are you there God? It's me Margaret","Starring Sally J. Friedman as Herself", and many others during my 5th grade year.
  • 6th Grade - Best Reading Teacher

6th Grade - Best Reading Teacher
My 6th grade Language Arts teacher would read chapter books aloud to us everyday. As soon as she would get to the best part, she would stop. The next day, she would begin a new book and if we wanted to know what happened in the last book, we had to read it ourselves! Needless to say, there would be a mad rush to the school library to try and get that book! This really got me into reading from this point on.
