    Theodore grew up with problems such as asthma and nearsightedness. He was home-schooled by his mother. Because his father deserved a manly son, Theodore often dealt with his father telling him he was a "disappointment."

    Because of his family’s finances, Theodore was privately tutored through high school. In 1876, he was accepted to Harvard University and studied natural science. There, he exceeded in academics and sports. After graduating from Harvard, he attended Columbia Law School to pursue a legal career.

    Alice Lee Roosevelt and Theodore were married on October 27, 1880. They had a daughter named after her. Their marriage was cut short when she died of Bright's Disease on February 14, 1884.
