    Orville Wright was born August 19, 1871 in Dayton, Ohio, on Hawthorn Street. He was one of five children to Bishop Milton Wright and Susan Catherine Wright.

    Orville began Dayton Central High School sometime in September of 1887. However, like his brother Wilbur, Orville never finished High School.

    Wilbur and Orville's mother, Susan Catherine Wright, died on July 4, 1889 of tuberculosis. She was married to Bishop Milton Wright and had seven children; two of which were Wilbur and Orville Wright.

    Otto Lilienthal was a German engineer. He died on August 10, 1896 in a glider crash in Berlin, Germany. His death was significant in the life of the Wright Brothers because it motivated the brothers to experiment with flight. It also led to them being the first to achieve controlled flight.

    Arriving at Kitty Hawk
    On September 6, 1900, the Wright Brothers arrived at Kitty Hawk for the first time. They began their experiments and tested their planes. They would leave and return to Kitty Hawk several more times before finally achieving flight.

    The Brothers left Kitty Hawk for the first time to go home and perfect their test designs. They would return to Kitty Hawk when they had new designs to test.

    After leaving their camp on October 23rd, the brothers returned to Kitty Hawk on July 10th. While at home, they changed parts of their old glider and built new larger experimental gliders.

    Again, the brothers left Kitty Hawk to perfect and build new designs. While at home, they conducted experiments with airfoils.

    The brothers arrived at Kitty Hawk to assemble and test their newest glider. They ended up making approximately 700 to 1,000 glides

    After many failed attempts, on December 17, 1903, in Kitty Hawk, Wilbur and Orville Wright became the first people to achieve controlled flight. The first flight trial was made by Orville Wright and it lasted 12 seconds. The flight travelled 120 feet.

    To prevent their designs from being stolen and copied, the brothers left Kitty Hawk to have their design patented. They employed Harry A. Toulmin, Esquire to help them.

    On May 22, 1906, the brothers were granted their plane patent. It was patented by the U.S. Patent Office at No. 821,393. The patent was for a flying machine.
  • War Department Acceptants

    On February 8, 1908, the U.S War Department accepted the brothers' plane. The department believed having the plane would be advantageous because unlike other countries the U.S. would be able to attack from the sky.

    Starting on October 8, 1909 and lasting untill November 2, 1909, Wilbur trained the first army flyers. They were trained in College Park, Maryland.

    On May 30, 1912, at 3:15 a.m., Wilbur Wright died of typhoid fever. He died at the age of 45. In 1965, Wilbur Wright was selected for the Hall of Fame of Great Americans.

    Orville Wright died in Dayton, Ohio of a heart attack. He was 75- years-old when he died. He had been with the NACA for 28 years.
