    Cavour modernized Sardinia's army, formed shrewd alliances, and fought a war that drove Austrians to the north.

    Giussepe Garibaldi
    The other italian states in the region then united with Sardinia. The same year Giussepe Garibladi gathered more than 1,000 passionate followers and overthrew the goverment in Sicily. A few months later Garibaldi and Cavour joined their lands together.

    In 1861 Italy bacame a united kingdom. Ten years later Rome became its capital.
