Key developments in the travel and tourism sector

  • Holiday Camps

    Between 1945 and 1960, holiday camps were at their peak, catering for about 60 per cent of the holiday market. Warners, Butlins and Pontins were important names in the market.
    The holiday camp went into decline in the 1970s as demand for sunshine and package holidays abroad grew.
  • IATA

    IATA was founded in Havana, Cuba. It is the prime vehicle of inter-airline cooperation in promoting safe, reliable, secure and economical air services- for the benefit of world consumers. The international scheduled air transport industry is more than 100 times larger than it was in 1945.
  • Package Holidays

    The first package holiday was organised by Vladimir Raitz. He took 32 passengers to Corsica and he charged them £32.50. The package included accommodation in tents, return flights, transfers and full board. He established Horizon Holidays in the same year, and by the end of the 1950s the company had grown to be the one of the UKs major tour operators. Other companies followed Horizons example and package tours grew in popularity.
  • ABTA

    The Association of British Travel Agents is founded by 22 leading travel companies. It helps customers have confidence in travel experience. It ensures that the industry and the public get a fair deal. Holidaymakers remain confident and heppy in the holiday products that they buy.
  • Reservations and Bookings

    As demand for travel grew in the 1950s onwards, reservations departments were introduced. With the advent of computers, tour operators and airlines developed their own systems. Eventually these systems were linked to travel agencies via terminals and travel agents could make bookings in their offices. The internet has grown rapidly as a means of booking hoildays and flights. With increased confidence and access information, travellers happily book all aspects of their holiday on-line.
  • Improved Education

    The level of education achieved by people from all sectors of society has improved since the 1960s. More students go to university and more of the population achieve at least a level 2 qualification, for example a GCSE.
  • Destination Development in Dubai

    When oil was discovered in 1966 infrastructure developed in Dubai: schools, hospitals, roads, a modern telecommunications network. The result was that Dubai quickly became a business and tourism hub. Dubai has now constructed hotels, residential developments and shopping centres to attract tourists and added infrastructure and transport links to bring tourists in.
  • FCO

    The FCO is the UK governmnet department responsible for protecting and promoting British interests around the world. The Foregin and Commonwealth Office (FCO) is aiming to provide more consular services digitally and to use digital tools to enhance policy work. It was created by merging the foregin office and the commonwealth office.
  • Trade Description Act

    The Trade Description Act makes it an offence for a trader to make false or misleading statements about goods or services. It carries criminal penalities and is enfoced by Trading Standards Officers. It ensures that products are sold as described with good quality and are fit for purpose as described. This act covers descriptions given both verbally and in writing.
  • Development of Tourism act

    The development of Tourism Act established a British Tourist Authority and tourist boards for England, Scotland and Wales. The acts aim was to co-ordinate all the organisations that make up the tourism sector and provide it with a singe voice. Since the act was passed the responsibility for tourism have been devolved to the Scottish Parliament and the Welsh Assembly. This has caused a lack of clarity in the role of VisitBritain, as its role is to market SCotland and Wales as well as England.
  • ATOL

    By law, every travel company which sells air holidays in the UK is required to hold an ATOL, which stands for Air Travel Organiser’s Licence. If an ATOL protected travel company ceases trading, the scheme protects customers who have booked holidays with the firm. It ensures that you don’t get stranded abroad or lose your money.
  • Boeing produced the 747 jumbo jet

    It became possible for passengers to fly further in less time. It is one of the most influential and admired passenger aircraft ever to be built. The 747 entered service on January 22, 1970, on Pan Am's scheduled flight from New York to London.
  • CAA

    The Civil Aviation Authority, which is a public corporation was established by Parliament in 1972 as an independent specialist aviation regulator and provider of air traffic services.
  • Unfair Contact Act

    The Unfair Contract Terms Act 1977 is an Act of Parliament of the United Kingdom which regulates contracts by restricting the operation and legality of some contract terms. It extends to nearly all forms of contract and one of its most important functions is limiting the applicability of disclaimers of liability.
  • Health and Safety act

    The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974 is the primary piece of legislation covering occupational health and safety in Great Britain. The Health and Safety Executive, with local authorities is responsible for enforcing the Act and a number of other Acts and Statutory Instruments relevant to the working environment.
  • AITO

    The Association of Independent Tour Operators (AITO) is an umbrella organisation that represents more than 120 of Britain's best independent tour operators. All AITO members are required to provide the highest level of customer satisfaction by concentrating on three main pillars: Choice, Quality and Service.
  • Transport Acts 1980 and 1985

    The 1980 Transport Act ended licensing regulations affecting express coach routes and tours over 30 miles. It led to competition between National Bus and private companies.
    The 1985 Transport Act brought wholesale deregulation. This meant private companies could operate on any routes.
  • Consumer Protection Act

    Law that allows consumers to get their money back if goods are found to be faulty or if products do not perform in the way claimed by the manufacturer. This act makes it a criminal offence if an organisation or an individual gives mislead information that could be mis-sold to a customer in a accommodation or flights.
  • Channel Tunnel

    Work on boring the tunnel began in the UK in 1987. The tunnel opened in 1994. Its original budget was £4.8 billion, but its final cost exceeded £10 billion.
  • Data Protection Act

    During the second half of the 20th century, businesses, organisations and the government began using computers to store information about their customers, clients and staff in databases. The Data Protection Act (DPA) is a law designed to protect personal data stored on computers or in an organised paper filing system.
  • Package Travel, Package Holidays and Package Tours Regulations

    All UK tour operators offering package holidays have been subject to the Package Travel Regulations. The regulations set out the tour operators responsibilities to their customers and what those customers can do if the regulations are breached.
  • Introduction and growth of low-cost airlines

    Deregulation of air travel in Europe led to the development of low-cost airlines. The European Union started the liberalisation process in 19987, when cost-related fares and certain types of discount fares were first allowed. The final stage of deregulation came in 1993.
  • Disability Discrimination Act

    The Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995 aims to end the discrimination that faces many people with disabilities. The legislation requires public bodies to promote equality of opportunity for people with disabilities. It also allows the government to set minimum standards so that people with disabilities can use public transport easily.
  • Employment rights act

    The Employment Act covers every employee (regardless of nationality) who is under a contract of service with an employer. Employment law provide employees and workers with fundamental employee rights under various employment legislation.

  • Air passenger duty

    In 1996, air passneger duty was reduced on economy flights, removing a barrier to the growth of inbound tourism. However, in 2006 it was greatly increased.

  • Self check-in at airports

    Self-service check-in first emerged about 20 years ago, but was only used by a few airlines on a few routes. The current versions of self-service check-in services are a world away from these first models, having been developed in 2000.
