Clare, age 6, meets Henry, age 36, for the first time in the clearing behind Clare's house.

Clare is often alone, waiting for Henry to return. One early morning, Clare hears gun shots, and runs out to the clearing. There, she sees her father, her older brother (Mark), and Henry talking quietly.

Henry accidentally tells Clare about her mother's death in the future. After being assaulted by a boy at school, Henry helps seek revenge for Clare. Clare also introduces Henry to her blind grandmother.

Clare turns 18, and Henry is 41. Clare loses her virginity to Henry, a key point in the novel.

Two years later, Clare and Henry meet in the Newberry Library in Chicago. Clare immediately recognizes Henry, but Henry has no recollection of Clare. Henry meets Clare's roomate, Charisse, and Charisse's husband, Gomez.

On Clare's 21st birthday, Henry proposes. Henry is 28.

Henry considers buying drugs for his condition, from a local dealer, Ben. A few weeks later, Clare finds Henry on the kitchen floor, having a strange reaction to the medication. He later spent the night in the Emergency Room.

It is Clare and Henry's wedding day, and Henry did not find medication to prevent time travelling for one day. He luckily did not travel the entire night.

Henry and Clare move into their new home, big enough to start a family of their own.

Clare's mother dies, which extremely affects her. She travels back to her hometown with Henry to go through her mother's belongings. She discovers the poetry her mother kept hidden for many years, one describes her love towards Clare.

After undergoing six miscarriages, Clare is finally pregnant. Clare goes through a brief depression, due to losing her babies. She is extremely careful not to lose her seventh baby.

Baby Alba is born, and a few days later, 9/11 occurs. On the morning of 9/11, Alba and Clare are sitting on the couch watching the news. Henry felt unsettled, because he already knew what was about to happen.

Past Henry spent a night in a parking garage, after trying to alert present Henry that he needed help. Present Henry and Clare could not find him, however. Henry eventually needs amputations on both of his feet. He spends the rest of his life in a wheelchair.

Henry travels back in time to his ex-girlfriend, Ingrid, and her home. They talked for awhile, and then he discovered she had manic depression. She shouted at him, asking why he never visited her in the hospital. She then commits suicide, right in front of Henry. Henry then returns to the present, and is extremely unsettled.

Henry knew the day and time he was going to be killed. Right when the clock struck midnight on New Years Eve, Henry time travelled back to October 27, 1984, the day Clare saw him standing in the meadow with her older brother and her father. That morning, Henry was shot and killed by Clare's older brother. Henry time travels back to New Years Eve, and dies.

Clare is 84 years old, and has only minutes left in her life. Henry time travels to see her, the first time in 45 years. She peacefully dies and lives with Henry for eternity.
