The Three Key Steps to Completing a Problem-Based Learning Activity

  • Period: to

    Research and Record

For the purpose of this timeline, these steps are set over a period of one week
-The teacher presents a problem or task to the students
-PBL research begins with collaborative brainstorming ideas -- students determine what they know about the problem (prior background knowledge), what they need to learn more about (topics to research), and where they need to look to find data
-Data collection -- students gather information about their topic from the appropriate sources
  • Period: to

    Report

-After their research is complete -- students create presentations that synthesize their research methods, findings, and solutions
-Findings can be presented using both visual and written formats
  • Assessment and Reflection

-During the PBL assessment step -- teachers use rubrics to determine whether students have clearly communicated their research problem, their research methods/resources, and their problem-solving strategies
-Teachers should also provide students with an opportunity to reflect upon the problem-solving process and to evaluate their own participation in their project
