  • UPA

Ferhat Abbas forms the Union Populaire Algérienne (UPA, Algerian Popular Union) which called for equal rights for Algerian Muslims and the preservation of native Algerian culture.
UPA- This called for equal rights for Muslims. I think this would have an impact on my book, because first my book talks about Muslims. The main character doesn't seem to really like them in my opinion. But, that isn't the main focus of the book. This event was important it help with Muslim independence. I believe it
  • War declared

France declared war on Germany; 350,000 from French North Africa mobilized
War declared-French declared war on Germany, which is just one start of World War 2. This is important, because during this time Algeria was still connected to France so, they were very much involved in this. I think this ties to my book, because this is very much a French book that has a lot of French influences. This would have to do with how strict the government is.
  • WW2

Germany invaded Poland, starting the war in Europe.
WW2-When Germany invaded Poland it started the war in Europe. Which is important, because this is another event that help start World War 2. During this time, a lot of men and women were working to help in the war. I think this helped shape my book, because the war shaped my how they acted towards people in the book.
  • Allies

Allied forces seized control of French Vichy administration of Algeria; became base for Free French
Allies-When Algeria was taken over it became Free France. It became a place that the people could go freely to. Algeria went at a regular pace in the book. The main character works, sleeps, and eats like there is no war. But, it does talk about Muslims and different races. Though the author was very involved in the government.
  • Ferhat Abbas

Ferhat Abbas, who heads independence movement, demands the creation of an Algerian constituent assembly following the fall of the Vichy administration
Ferhat Abbas-The independent movements were more important to Algeria itself. Algeria will later on in history clam its independence from France. Though in the book there was no talk about Algeria wanting any independence, there wasn’t any talk about war either. Even though the book was placed at this time it didn’t include certain events.
  • Messali Hadj

In April 1945 the French had arrested the Algerian nationalist leader Messali Hadj
    - This event caused a lot of violence when it came to Hadj getting arrested. This made the people very mad, and angry. In the book the man character get arrested for being apart of a murder. The violence seems to be a normal thing in Algeria arond this time. And, seems to be a thing with one of the other charaters in the book.
  • Setif

Demonstrations for independence turned violent in Setif, French troops called in, thousands of Muslims were killed
-This is a big event for Muslims that lived in Algeria at the time. The dislike of Muslims at this time was a big thing. Though it isn’t really stated why in the book there some hate. The book has a character that has a mistress that has a Muslim brother that he hates. He calls him “The Arab.” Which to me is a way of poking fun at him.
  • Union Democratique

Ferhat Abbas formed Union Democratique du Manifeste Algerian, called for creation of independent Algeria, rather than province of France.
-This event made to make sure that Algeria would no longer be considered a provinve of France. This is one of the many things that was happening, because Algeria was soon going to push for their independence from France. The book was written before, but could still be greatly effected when it comes to the lifestyle of the poeple.
  • Statute of Algeria

In 1947 the French national assembly passed the Statute of Algeria, under which the Muslims were to be given some additional political power. Most of the statute's provisions were not implemented, however, and the colonists continued to control Algerian affairs.- This event gave Muslims more power in the Algerian government which was good for them. But, from the prosective of my book it desn't seem like the people wouldn't like that very much. Which is why they kept control of the affairs.
  • Muslim group seceded

    Muslims group seceded.
A radical group of Muslims seceded in 1954 from Messali's MTLD, formed the National Liberation Front (FLN; its military arm was called the National Liberation Army or ALN), and attacked police posts and other government offices in the Batna-Constantine region. This is important, because in the book has a character that doesnt favor "Arabs." Which at this time was not an uncommon thing for people to feel this way.
