    Letter to a friend

This letter is from a Native American nurse to a friend. She describes different occurrences, even her first time experiencing a death. There is something particularly striking about this letter, and it is that this nurse had been assigned to work with possibly white soldiers, whereas African American nurses were not allowed to work with white soldiers, only African American soldiers. This nurse also includes personal aspects of her life, and by the tone she uses in the letter, is fairly young.

    Masters at mask making

This snippet of newspaper describes girls from a sorority making masks to help combat the flu. This gives a glimpse into how the pandemic has affected the lives of college students. It was able to give them a reason to fight against this virus that could very well be threatening their futures. By making masks, one of the preventative steps being taken against the flu, they were able to help combat the virus and were able to secure a future for lots of different people, not just themselves.

Class outside is a dream right?

Again, the flu attempts to strike down the dreams of people attempting to build futures for themselves. While this is still a solution to being in a closed up space and risking the virus indoors, there could also be a slight risk of the virus outside due to the lack of masks on these students. There could also be factors as to why no masks, as it could be that there were not many manufactured. This solution is just another to keep the virus at bay and to help build a future for the country.
  • Report, report, report!

    Report, report, report!

This is a health report for a Native American school located in Albuquerque. The superintendent reports, apart from some injuries and deaths not related to influenza, the amount of cases of flu in two different instances. Although it does not give any looks into student perspectives, the given perspective is just enough to deduce that the superintendent does not seem so concerned for the Native Americans' cases of flu, sounding flippant. It could be that racism plays into this perspective.
