    Wilson asked congress to declare war in Germany in order to keep democracy safe. The Zimmerman note and the sinking of the Lusitania were also factors.

    Fourteen Points-Wilson
    The Fourteen poits were Wilson's plan for peace. He gave his Fourteen Poits speech to congerss. This plan included reducing arms, lowering tariffs, and the creation of a League of Nations. This plan was later rejected by congress.
  • Espionage and Sedition Act- Wilson

    Espionage and Sedition Act- Wilson
    The Sedition Act was passed as an amendment to the Espionage Act. This meant that peoplw were not allowed to speak out against the government or do any thing that was considered disloyal to the Country. This Act showed how in order to protect the country overall peoples rights could be limited, Especially during war time.

    Wilson urged congress to give suffrage to women. This was also because of the new roles that women were playing insociety due to the war. The ammendment was pased on January 10 1918.

    Calvin Coolidge was president during the Roarin' 20s. This was a time when many new inventions were created. One of these inventions was the automobile. This gave people many new opportunities. This is also what created urban sprawl, people were able to travel long distances to work which spread out cities.

    Right before the Great Depression hit, Americans were buying all of the new inventions of the 20's. These were things like cars, washing machines, iron, refrigerators, and sewing machines. In order to pay for these Americans used installment plans. This allowed people to have the products and to pay over an extended period.

    During Hardings presidency, his cabinet the Ohio gang caused a huge scandal. His Secretary of the Interior Albert B. Fall was able to get the oil reserve transferred from the Nave to the interior department. He seacretly leased this land and got over 400,000 dollars. He was found guilty of bribery and was convicted. This caused huge embarassment for Harding.

    Warren G. Harding death
    Harding died sudenly in the the summer of 1923. This occured shortly after the Teapot Dome scandal. His death is said to have been most likely caused by a stroke.

    John T. Scopes was arrested for teaching evolution. This trial captured national attention and allowed evolution to be taught in schools.
  • Black Tuesday- Herbert Hoover

    Black Tuesday was the day that the stock market crashed. It worseded when share holders tried to sell their stock before it dropped lower. A record 16.4 shares were dumped that day. This was a major cause of the great depression.

    This tariff was created to protect farmers and manufactures from foreign competiotion. This significantly brought down would trade by preventing other countries from getting US currency to buy from America.

    Drought swept the Great Plains during the early 30's. Massive dust storms hit hardest in Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Colorado. These destroyed farms and moved families west.

    This gave 2 billion for emergancy financing for banks and other businesses. The plan was for this to eventualy get to the average citizen, However people needed direct relief.

    The New Deal is remembered by 3 r's, relief, recovery, and reform. This also included new deficit spending. A way for the government to spend more than it really has.

    This was the first thing that Roosevelt did after he was elected. This closed the banks to keep them from making any more withdrawals. The Emergency Banking relief act was also passed to inspect the banks. The banks that were doing well could stay open which helped increase trust in banks.

    Fireside chats were talks on the radio from Roosevelt. During these he would speak about things that were going on in the country. They were imformal and made people feel much more involved and felt the president was speaking to them.

    Established Social Security for people over the age of 65. Created a system for the unemployed.
  • Revenue Act-Coolidge

    This Act lowered income taxes. It showed that normalcy had been returned.
