The Japanese chose to fight rather, resulting in the attack on Pearl Harbor, which killed more than 2,300 Americans. A total of 12 ships sank or were beached in the attack and 9 additional vessels were damaged. More than 160 aircraft were destroyed
    and more than 150 others damaged. Four days later the U.S. declared war.
