  • Assassination of president james garfield

    ASSASSINATION
    -charles j. guieau
    WHY
    -he thought god had told him to shoot the president.
    -he had written a speech for garfield that helped him win the presidential elecion.
    -formulated the delusion that the speech was a key factor in the presidents victory.
    -asked to be rewarded with a consulship (chairman of the senate) in paris.
    RESULT
    - doctors killed the president because they didnt wash their hands .
    -this helped create the pendleton act.
  • pendleton act of 1883

    -patronage is a practice in which a political party, after winning an election ,gives gov. civil service jobs to its supporters as reward working towards victory.
    -merit system is process of promoting & hiring gov. employees based on ability to preform a job.
    -the public shock at garfields assasination led to the pendleton act which helped ensure passage .civil service commission was created to give competitive exams & selected appointees based on merit.
  • the interstate commerce act of 1887

    -The causes for the law was to regulate the railroad industry particulary its monopolistics practices. surpreme court ruled that state laws should not regulate interstate railroads. congress had the exclusive power to regulate railroads.The railroad monopolistics had the power to set prices,exclude competitors ,and control several geographic areas in individual state . The importance of this law is to prevent state policies that favored businesses at the expense od citizens.

    Harsh Working Conditions

    -the women and children worked for 10 to 14 hours a day for six days a week getting paid 3$ to 12$ weekly. Children mostley worked on big machines to clean them , they were small enough to fit between them. Industries were a big issue for children, it was a big risk for many factories.

    the purpose of this lawmaking was to protect consumers from the efforts of trusts , and monopolies to unfairly restrain trade. its aim was to preserve economic competition in the market place and it imposed severe penalties on those violating the legislation. the effect of the sherman antitrust act was the first measure enacted by the u.s congress to prohibit trust monopolies . the gov . used this toward j.d. rockefelle w/ standard oil to disband his monopoly w/ oil industry.

    Populist "peoples" party

    populist wanted government to take a larger role , ending oppression , injustice and povery. Farmers industrial workers and miners were all supporting them . The platform for this was direct election of senators , unlimited coinage of silver , shorter work days ,immigration restrictions with quotas.

    -informing northerners that lynching in the u.s was occurring down in the south. African americans moved to new york .Wells anti-lynching campaign.
  • Plessy v. ferguson

    In 1890, the state of Louisiana passed a law. it semmed from on 1892 incident in which African american train passenger homer Plessy refused to sit in a Jim crow car,breaking a Louisiana law. states could provide segregated facilities to different races ,so as long as they were equal in quality .NAACP lawyers began challenging this "separate but equal" american court system. After ruling the Jim crow law began spreading through out school, restaurants ,etc...
  • klondike region

    -100,000 set out by only 30,000 made it to the region the difficult journey they had to witness was cause it was cold weather and they had to climb up a slope as well just to get their destination . Miners risked their lives to try and get rich fast plus the gov. at the time did not have any environment protect , the most important impact it also had was the towns cause the products costs more for miners then them finding gold.

    Muckraker - one who inquires into and publishes into and publishes scandal and allegations of corruption among political and business leaders.
    -muckraker exposed people with unsafe working conditions ,political corruption and social injustice .
    -muckraker lessoned corruption in many aspects of american life.
  • pure food and drug act

    -reporters started to expose harmful ingredients in certain foods and medicines , such as coca-cola originally having cocaine in it.
    - the gov. then began enforcing the production & distribution of consumer products by founding the food and drug administration (FDA).
    -products were later required to label the harmful ingredients and would later on remove them.
  • National association for the advancement of colored people (NAACP)

    -formed in 1909 by w.e.b du bois & ida b. wells.
    -its mission is to ensure the political ,educational ,social and economic equality of rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination.
    -naacp tried to help african americans by using the courts.with the help of african america and white lawyers,they filed cases to challenge segregation & discrimination.
    -naacp was a chance for african americans to gain the rights that they deserved.
