On May 20th, 1883, Krakatoa in Indonesia erupted. Upon erupting, ash clouds reached up to 6 miles and explosions were heard 100 miles away. By the end of May, it stopped but continued again on June 19th, and in August, very violent eruptions occurred.

On May 8th, 1902, Mount Pelée in Martinique erupted. The violent eruption killed 30,00 people, which was 15% of the population. Minor eruptions had occurred years before, but nothing like this. Nearby cities were also destroyed.

On May 19th, 1915, Mount Lassen (Lassen Peak) in California erupted. The first eruption was a year before, and smaller eruptions happened for a bit before they became violent by the given date. This eruption also caused some mudflows. It continued erupting for some time.

On May 18th, 1980, the infamous Mount St. Helens erupted in Washington. 57 people and thousands of animals died from this eruption. Many trees were destroyed and by the end of the eruption, its volcanic cone had been completely blasted away! The smoke could be seen for miles!

Starting in 1983, a chain of eruptions from Mount Kilauea in Hawaii lasted a long while. Flowing lava had reached the sea, which was miles away. One eruption had shot volcanic ash thousands of feet into the air. This one is a tad hard to describe, so click below to learn more.

On November 13th, 1985, Mount Ruiz in Colombia erupted. The eruption buried the town of Armeno and killed about 25,000 people. This also caused a mudslide that killed 1000 people. Two explosions happened upon this volcano erupting.

On June 12th, 1991, Mount Pinatubo in The Philippines erupted. The eruption caused 300 deaths and left 100,000 homeless. Lots more died later from disease in evacuation camps. The eruption started with lots of explosions and lasted a few days. Smaller explosions had occurred months in advance
