    The Cuban Revolution of 1959 began with the failed attack on the Moncada Barracks, and ended in triumph with the ousting of dictator Fulgencio Batista. Castro was then exiled for two years for his safety. While in Mexico he trained his guerilla to take on Batista. They succeeded in taking him out and eventually, Batista decided the situation was hopeless. Castro won the revolution and is now the dictator.

    On April 17 about 1500 exiles, armed with U.S. weapons, landed at the Bahía de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs) on the south coast of Cuba. Hoping to find support from the local population, they intended to cross the island to Havana, but were quickly stopped by Castro's army. By the time the fighting ended on April 19, about 100 had been killed and the rest taken prisoner.

    The Berlin Wall was a barrier that surrounded West Berlin and prevented access to it from East Berlin and adjacent areas of East Germany. The Berlin Wall was built on the night between August 12 and 13th, 1961, as the result of a decree by the East German Volkskammer. However, the construction of the actual Berlin Wall did not begin until August 17. When the Berlin Wall was being built, it was a weekend where most Berliners slept while the East German government began to close the border.
