People of all ages, even children, gather around in the town square for the annual lottery.
-
The Lottery is conducted by Mr. Summers. After greeting everyone, they begin.
-
One representative from each family , normally the oldest male, chooses on paper from the box in the middle of the square.
-
Tessie, the wife of Bill Hutchinson, arrives late from work.
-
Bill is called up to the box, and quickly chooses on paper.
-
Each representative opened their paper hoping not to see the black dot.
-
After opening his paper, Bill finds that it is marked with the black dot.
-
After finding out that her husband had picked the marked paper, Tessie rushes to the conclusion that Mr.Summers rushed Bill. She also asks them to give the family another chance. Instead the lottery goes on.
-
Mr. Summers places 6 papers including the marked one back in the box. (One paper for each family member) This time each person in the family must pick from the box.
-
Once again, the members open their paper one by one. Being the 5th person in the family to open his paper was Bill. But it was blank. Tessie was the only one left to open hers, but everyone already knew that she had chosen the marked one.
-
As Tessie shouted out about how she thought the drawing wasnt fair, people gathered around her and started throwing stones at her. She fell to the ground, and was left there. She had "won" the lottery.
